Cycling Performance Test
Aerobic test A little info about the test: The test starts at an easy intensity and increases in intensity every 3 min until you are unable to continue. The protocol is similar to progressively climbing a hill that gradually increases in gradient. It is a maximal test and the last few loads will be heavy and intensive, but more than likely nothing that you would be unaccustomed to. The test ends when you decide that you can’t continue. Toward the end of each 3 min stage we will prick your finger to obtain a small drop of blood to measure blood lactate concentration. You will need to wear a heart rate monitor so that we can record your heart rate during each 3 min stage and characterize 3 heart rate zones based on your lactate thresholds for use in training and racing. Throughout the test you will breathe through a mouthpiece (similar to a snorkel) for analysing your expired air. Based on the results obtained during the test we will determine your peak power output, VO2max, lactate thresholds (an aerobic and anaerobic lactate threshold) and cycling efficiency. Your results will be presented in a table where you can compare your values to published average values for well-trained and professional cyclists. We will describe the meaning of each value and its relevance for cycling performance. Furthermore we will comment on your results to further assist in explaining its relevance and usefulness for training or racing and possibly suggests ways of improving. Reports will be sent by e-mail within 2 weeks of your test but can also be posted on request.
Anaerobic test: Anaerobic cycling capacity is measured using a specially designed bicycle in a test called a Wingate test. If you choose to do this test, you will be required to sprint all out for 30 sec against a resistance equal to 7.5% of your body mass. Peak anaerobic power, mean power and fatigue index (rate of decline in power over the 30 sec) provides info on your anaerobic capacity.
What you should bring: For both tests you will ride our constant-load bikes that are fitted with toe-clips. Mountain bike shoes or normal takkies work fine with these pedals. You will also need cycling shorts, T-shirt and hand towel (we do have shower facilities if you'd like to shower afterwards). We suggest that you don’t exercise on the day of your test and only light to moderate exercise the day before.
How to book your test: Testing will be done every Tuesday and Friday morning at the following time slots: 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm. To book a time you can contact Tanja Oosthuyse on 0834009088 or send an e-mail (oosthuyse@polka.co.za) with the date and time suits you.
Cost and payment method: The test and full report will cost R700. Payment must be made in full before your scheduled test day. All payments must be done by bank transfer and confirmation sent by fax or e-mail. Banking details: First National Bank Acc name: Wits Commercial Enterprise Pty (Ltd.)
