The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) indicates that 40% of adult South African deaths occur as a direct result of chronic diseases of lifestyle which are a direct result of the lack of regular aerobic exercise during adult life, the consumption of an unhealthy diet over many decades and the long-term use of tobacco products.
The Exercise Laboratory consists of a vibrant and dynamic research team. We believe that exercise plays an essential role in treating, and even preventing, chronic diseases of lifestyle such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis. As such, our research focuses on exercise and physical activity as a lifestyle tool to improve the health of South Africans, both young and old.
The Exercise Laboratory is also involved in the assessment of performance in athletes, both recreational and elite. We offer a professional and scientific assessment of performance and recommend training programs to improve performance.
